Graduation and Songs on the Sidewalk

This is only the beginning, son.

After the graduation ceremony and dinner last night, as we were gathering on the sidewalk waiting for Jon’s buddies to come pick him up. Jonathan’s friend Zane pulled out his ipod and told my son he was going to play something to make him choke up.

Within moments “The Cave,” by Mumford and Sons started playing, and Zane, Jon’s two brothers and I all started singing, and getting most of the words right and in the right order. I think we even did a pretty darn good job on the melody.

The neighbors were watching, but we are used to that. You’d think they’d be used to us by now. It was oddly appropriate. High school graduation is like coming out of a cave. People tell you lies and bullshit like those were the best years of your life. And yup, there is a song about that, a song that should never have made it on the radio in my opinion. Jon, this is just another beginning. There is so much more out ahead of you. I know you dream, so I encourage you to dream big, and to go for it. You have our support.

A friend sent me an email saying the same thing today. I’m so glad I was able to introduce you to them. This is from their album, “The Cave.” I think I read that they are coming out with a sophomore album very soon.

Congrats to your son! Getting through high school is quite an achievement these days! So kudos…

And, you know, there are a few people for whom high school was their Best Years — I know some of them, and, they are sad individuals, who’s achievements never equalled that of what they felt their achievements were in high school. But, for most of the rest of us, high school sucked, and, for me, I’d never wish to go back and relive those days.

It’s great that you encourage your son to Dream Big… so many parents just encourage their kids to be a part of the status quo. Dream Big, Jon — and Live Big!

Ever hear Billy Joel sing “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant?”

Brender and Eddy had had it already by the summer of 75
From the high to the low to the end of the show for the rest of their lives. . .

Yup, not the way I wanted to live, nor how I want my boys to.
