A Question from Joseph Gordon-Levit and Zooey D.

New Year's Eve

There are a lot of wonderful versions of this song out there, including Harry Connick Jr.’s, the first one I ever heard. But it’s one of those songs that have been around for a while and have been performed by everyone from Barbara Streisand to Ella Fitzgerald. There is even this delightful duet between Rufus Wainwright and Boy George!

My friend Ricky, possibly knowing that I have a thing for Joseph Gordon-Levit (I am still hoping against hope for a Robin sequel to the Dark Knight series of movies!) introduced me to my new favorite rendition of this song.

Is there a version of this song that really makes your New Year’s celebration? Please share it in the comments! New Year’s Eve is tomorrow night. Is it too early or too late to ask? . . .

  2. Oh how I love to hate to love this song. I think Harry Connick’s was the first version I heard, too, which makes it special because. . . well, Harry Connick, Jr. I also adore Diana Krall’s version.
I know about She & Him, but I hadn’t actually heard Zooey’s voice until now. Thanks for posting this. Nice!

Happy New Year — love the wintry theme.

    1. Hey, thanks for that theme input! I was trying to capture a bit of the light in the darkness and it’s nice to hear that it works for people. 🙂

With the song, yeah, there are so many versions of this song, and some are not that exciting, but I guess I’m really going to have to check out this She & Him thing. Happy New Year to you Hippie Cahier!

The version I first heard was Ella’s, but the one I’ve heard the most frequently is on the Mixed Nuts soundtrack, sung by the O’Jays.
And even though this is completely unrelated, the Rufus Wainwright version reminded me of another duet of his:
